UNEP FI’s new paper, How to Think About Banks’ Contribution to Sustainability and Sustainable Development?, explores how banks’ contribution to sustainability and sustainable development can be understood and measured.

One of the paper’s key messages is that while banks’ own operations matter for sustainability, the majority of their impacts occur downstream, are indirect, and are mediated through the activities they finance.

This makes bank-specific expectations, indicators, and impact measurement approaches essential.

Looking beyond 2030, clarifying the role of private actors, especially banks, will be critical to accelerating global progress on sustainability.
