Multidimensional Poverty & the Climate Crisis: Overlapping Hardships

Prepared in collaboration between the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and UNDP, the 2025 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report has just been released.

  •  Title: “Overlapping Hardships: Poverty and Climate Hazards”

Based on data from 109 countries, the report reveals how poverty is experienced across multiple dimensions—and how it overlaps with climate-related vulnerabilities.

Key insights:
• 1.1 billion people live in acute multidimensional poverty.
• Most face at least one climate hazard; many, several.
• The poorest regions are projected to warm the most.
• Over half of those in poverty are children.
• Common deprivations: Nutrition, electricity, sanitation, housing.

The report calls for integrated solutions that tackle poverty and climate vulnerability together.
